Today, a 51-kilometer ring road around the island combines the coast together. The core of the island is forested and is still difficult to cross. The highest point is the Khao Kwai Thai with about 635 meters. Prior to 1970 the main income of Koh Samui was the coconut plantations until 1990, when the Island become more popular for tourists. Now only a few people living here from rubber tees, coconut cultivation and fishing.

It is the longest beach on the island (about 6 kilometers). The beaches Chaweng Noi  and Chaweng Yai are separated by a rock formation. The approximately 1-kilometer-long beach is close to Tonsai Bay. It is very suitable for swimming because the water is deeper faster than the other beaches. From here you can enjoy a splendid view of Koh Phi Phi Ley, where the famous Maya Beach is located. Behind the beach and the hills are numerous bungalows and hotels. Sometimes you can stay here quite inexpensive. For young people it is particularly interesting, given the close proximity of the famous Reggae Pub, the Hippies Bar and other party venues.

Laem Thong Beach
This beach is also known as the luxury Beach and you'll find some very exclusive hotels here. The palm-lined, 600 meters long beach with fine sand and clear water is great for snorkeling and swimming. It is located in the north of the island and it's quiet and you can relax. A lot of activity at night as Long Beach or Ton Sai Village One looks in vain. This beach is easily reached by taxi boat. On the beach there are nice small restaurants that serve fine dishes and especially seafood. Who wants to go out at night can order a taxi boat to Tonsai or the Long Beach and talk with the driver for an appointment to return.
