Koh Phangan FactsKoh Phangan is located about 55 km from the mainland and about seven kilometers east of Koh Samui. The island is about one-third smaller than Koh Samui but has a similar structure with white sandy beaches, easily accessible coral reefs and a mountainous, forested interior. Koh Phangan is still a very idyllic island and because of the poor road network, touristy not structured as well as Koh Samui. Koh Phangan is about 168 square kilometers and is home of 13,000 residents. Thong Sala is the largest village on the island. The highest point of the island is the Khao Ra mountain with 630 meters above sea level. Locals live mainly from fishing and tourism. The island offers a quiet environment and in addition, Koh Phangan has its own hospital, police station and post office.
The Beaches on Koh PhanganKoh Phangan offers an abundance of beautiful sandy beaches around the island. Developed for the tourism are the best beaches in the north-west of the island with the Salad Beach and Chalok Lum Beach and the beaches at the south, Haad Rin, Ban Thai and Ban Khai. These beaches are located opposite of Koh Samui`s Bhoput Beach and offer a beautiful view of the larger neighboring island. Usually, the beaches of the south have the more entertaining nightlife and the beaches in the north are the place to unwind and relax with a quiet atmosphere.

About 10 minutes drive from the Pier of Thong Sala is the Chao Phao beach. With its sweeping curved course and the beautiful sunsets the beach offers a very good image for the travelers. Variety provides the coral reef which is located about 100 meters away. The nice Chalok Lum Bay Resort is located on this stretch of beach.
Also known by the name "Bottle Beach". This really quiet and secluded section is very popular by travelers in the off season, because even the swimming here is possible without problems. The beach is surrounded by mountains and it requires a boat or a 2 km hike to get there.

The beach is divided into two sections and is probably the most famous of Koh Phangan, the one that takes place monthly Full Moon Party. At this event, approximately 10,000 people come to the beach to celebrate. Otherwise, the beach has the most beautiful sunsets that can be seen from here. The beach is long and wide, and is also suitable for swimming at low tide. You can look from here to Koh Samui. The beach has received a small haven of tourists from Koh Samui. The accommodations range from luxury resorts such as the Central Cottage Resort to simple bungalows near the beach.
Ban Tai and Ban Khai Beach
The long beaches are famous for the impressive romantic sunset atmosphere. From the small village of Ban Tai boat tours can be arranged. The 8-kilometer-long sandy beach is very popular by peace-seekers. The resorts are generously distributed from each other, thus there are no overcrowded beach resorts.

Haad Salad is a peaceful and secluded beach of fine white sand and clear water. With a coral reef just 150 meters away, it is also ideal for snorkeling. For tales of the locals to this bay a harbor for pirates who prey have been entrenched. Also in this section are to receive accommodations in all price ranges.
Considered by some to be one of the best beaches in Thailand, the just 1 kilometer long beach is a real Paradise. Here are some luxury hotels and bungalow resorts which were simply formed and very nice built into the hill behind the beach. The beach is large enough for any beach sports activities such as beach soccer and beach volleyball. The nightlife here includes some good bars.

Activities and AttractionsApart from the beaches of the island there is a lookout point and a few waterfalls to admire that you can achieve with a rented scooter. The daily rate is from 150 baht upwards.
The island offers many vantage points on which one can reach on foot. The highest point of Koh Phangan, Khao Ra is 630 meters. The trails are not always easy to commit, so hikers should always wear sturdy footwear.
Koh Phangan offers some very good diving spots and places for snorkeling. The diving centers on the Island offer diving courses and daytrips to several diving spots. The clear water allows good visibility under water and a lot of colourfull fishes can be observed at the local coral reefs.
